What is Chondrus Crispus?
A species of red algae from the Atlantic coast, also known as Irish Moss, that produces carrageenan when processed.
Why is it used in products?
It's a natural emollient and film-former that gives products a smooth, hydrating feel and is popular in natural and organic formulations.
Why does it clog pores?
Chondrus Crispus is rich in sulfated polysaccharides that form a thick occlusive gel on skin, trapping sebum in follicles. Its high iodide content inflames the pore lining, making breakouts more likely. This is one of the most common seaweed-derived pore cloggers in "natural" skincare.
