What is Ecklonia?
A genus of brown kelp found mainly in the Southern Hemisphere and East Asia, used for its potent antioxidant compounds like phlorotannins.
Why is it used in products?
It's valued for its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, often positioned as a high-performance anti-aging ingredient.
Why does it clog pores?
Ecklonia is a brown algae with high iodide content that aggravates acne by irritating hair follicle linings. Its polysaccharides also create an occlusive layer that prevents sebum from draining properly. Despite its anti-inflammatory marketing, it can paradoxically trigger breakouts in acne-prone skin.
