What is Lauric Acid?
A 12-carbon saturated fatty acid naturally found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and breast milk.
Why is it used in products?
It has antimicrobial properties and is used as an emulsifier, surfactant, and the building block for many cosmetic ingredients.
Why does it clog pores?
Lauric acid is one of the key reasons coconut oil is so comedogenic. It's a solid fatty acid at skin temperature that can crystallize inside pores and form stubborn plugs. While it does have antibacterial properties, its pore-clogging action typically outweighs any antimicrobial benefit for acne-prone skin.
