What is Propylene Glycol Monostearate?
An ester of propylene glycol and stearic acid, closely related to PG Monostearate, used as an emulsifier and emollient.
Why is it used in products?
It creates stable emulsions and provides a smooth, moisturizing skin feel in lotions and creams.
Why does it clog pores?
This ingredient creates a stearic acid-based occlusive layer over pores while the propylene glycol moiety helps it penetrate into follicular openings. The result is a comedogenic film that's both on top of and inside the pore. It has a moderate comedogenic rating in dermatological testing.
