What is Rockweed?
A common name for several brown seaweeds that attach to intertidal rocks, including species of Fucus and Ascophyllum.
Why is it used in products?
It's used as a general mineral-rich seaweed extract in natural and marine-themed skincare products.
Why does it clog pores?
Rockweed species are brown algae with high iodide concentrations that trigger follicular inflammation and acne. Their alginates form a thick gel on the skin that physically blocks pore openings. The vague name means you could be getting any number of highly comedogenic brown seaweed species.
